ABOUT THE PG DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE

P.G.Department of political science was established in 1985-86. First PG course in political science in affiliated colleges of Andhra pradeh. P.G.Department of political science is located in the ground floor of the PG Main Building premises. Granted permanent affiliation by Andhra University in 1998. Department was started with 2 faculty members and 25 students. The faculty has grown from 2 to 5 and students from 25 to 50. The faculty consisted of 2 professors 2 readers and one assistant professor. P.G.Department of political science was recognized as a research potential as research center by Andhra university.4 faculty members were recognized as research guides by Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. And 4 out of 5 faculties are doctorates.

All the faculty members are well qualified, committed and have good exposure in academic affairs. Many eminent professors, academicians, resource persons from various universities were invited to share their ideas and opinions with the students and the faculty. Only college in the entire district of west Godavari offering post graduation in political science.

Objectives of Departement

  • Marching towards academic excellence.
  • To create conducive and ideal conditions for developing creativity among the students.
  • To shape the students useful to the society and the nation.

  • To impart value –based education besides bookish knowledge.
  • To promote the concept of “earn while learn” keeping in view of economic background of the students.
  • To prepare students to face various competitive examinations.
  • Optimization and integration of the modern teaching and learning opportunities.
  • To mould the students to face the future challenges.
  • To enable the students to analyze and evaluate various facts of current political issues.

Curricular Aspects

  • As far a PG Courses are concerned they do not come under the pruview of autonomous courses. The university controls these courses and the syllabus framed by the board of studies of Adikavi Nannaya University, Rajamahendravaram is to be followed strictly. However in each paper in each year one or more chapters more than the syllabus prescribed is also touched upon and is explained for the benefit of the students.
  • Syllabus was modified during the academic year 2015-2016 for Final Year students in the Subject theory of International Relations and International Organizations and global Issues
  • Syllabus was modified during the academic year 2015-16 for previous students in the subject of ‘Foreign Policy – I & II’.
  • Syllabus copies are available in the form of a CD in the Department as well as at PG General Library for the benefit of the students.

Teaching, Learning and Evaluation

  • Annual Academic plans are prepared
  • Keeping in view the different levels of learning and background of the students , the department has been using different types of teaching aids. Syllabus and old question papers are kept in the department and library.

Research, Consultancy and Extension

  • Preparation of Project Report by each student of the IV semester under the supervision of faculty member.
  • Allotment of separate topic for dissertation for each student.
  • Encouraging students to take up study projects under the guidance of faculty member.
  • Distribution of books and pencils to the students in Orphanage Homes by faculty members and students.
  • Extensive participation of faculty members and students in Swatcha Bharat Programme.

Modern teaching methods adopted

  • The PG department of political science students are given various topics to do study projects. The purpose of such a study projects are to enable the students to refer various books – primary and secondary sources and collect information on the concerned topics and later prepare the same in the form of faculty members, which has to be done consistently, systematically and efficiently. Students prepared study projects.
  • Presentation of a specific topic using OHP sheets.
  • Academic packages are prepared and distributed to the students.
Tutorials

The students have given tutorial classes almost everyday as part of their curriculum. 6 tutorial classes were conducted in every week for the benefit of the students.

Class room seminars

seminars are made by the students. The students have the choice entire to select their own topics as concepts or as given by the year students are combined together and present papers. Questions are shot by the students to the speaker. Thus classroom seminars are made meaning ful and information oriented and it also enables speaking and communication skills in the students. Classroom seminars were organized by the department on different topics.

Continues evolution Methods
  • Conducting internal assessment examinations and semester examinations as per the rules and regulations of Andhra university.
  • Our department conducting one written examination and second one is online examination for all the semester students.
  • Classroom tests are conducted regularly to assess the students performance and feedback is given .
    • Ward counseling
      • Ward counseling : the students are given sufficient counseling on their career, health ,personal problems studies , family problems etc., the wards are divided in five groups and a tutor is allotted about 15 students.
      • Guiding the students on their emotional, psychological, financial problems.
      • Guiding the students for undertaking study projects and informing them the importance of maximum utilization of library and other information resources available in the institution.
      • Faculty gives proper guidance and help to overcome their problems.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

  • A survey was conducted on Elections -2009 of eluru parliamentary constitutency in west Godavari district.
  • Students are encouraged to participate in society out reach programmes
  • Published and distributed of pampheltes on the following issues of social concerns.
  • Environment awareness programme.
  • AIDS awareness programme.
  • Awareness Right to Vote.

Endowment Scholarships
  • Sri Alluri Bapineedu,Ex-President of Sir C.R.Reddy College,Memorial Fund for PG Political Science Students.
  • Ward Counseling: The students are given sufficient counseling on their career,health,personal problems studies, family problems etc.,the wards and divided in 5 groups and a tutor is allotted about 15 students.
  • Career Guidance : Guidance given to the students by the faculty for the preparation of Group-I and Group-II examinations, National Eligibility Test and State Eligibility Test.

  • Students participated in Data Collection for the survey on 2009 Election in Eluru Parliamentary Constituency.
  • Some of the student of our department participated in essay writing and elocution competitions and won many prizes organized bt the college in different occasions.
  • 10 students of our department have participated in volleyball, Andhra university,’D’ Zone and central zone tournaments.
  • Students actively participated to Two national seminars and classroom Seminars.
